Modern Furniture Advertisements

Art Direction and creative concept for a "Dwell" style advertisement for custom modern furniture designer, Michael Todd Smith. The concept begins in a furniture gallery setting with educated, young, environmentally conscious 20-somethings with disposable income and an appreciation of modern design. The concept of form over function is explored, is the furniture to be viewed as simply a piece of artwork, or as a functional piece in the home. The second double page spread presents one of the gallery subjects enjoying his purchase, while reading a "Dwell" magazine with the table featured on the cover. The feature story of this "Dwell" is furniture pieces that explore the form over function question.

Thy layouts are minimal, have an extremely modern feel, utilizing a structured, sans-serif font, and keeping the color scheme basically back, white and gray. The double page spreads challenge the traditional advertisements normally seen in "Dwell" by utilizing an extreme amount of white space, making them stand out against other advertisements that are largely image heavy and colorful. I felt comfortable letting the table stand out on its own, by using the lighting techniques determined by myself and the photographer, and the beautiful form of the table. Careful placement of the table, the expressions and body language of the models, and the lighting combined with the strong use of white space make this advertisement series successful.

This website was created in a text editor using css and html, the image was originally one image, taken and manipulated by me in Photoshop. Each image is a link, and when clicked, opens to a new window with the image larger. The site uses absolute positioning.

Non-Linear Navigation

This website was created using css and html in a text editor. I took the images with a Nikon D-40, and did all image manipulation in Photoshop. All images were originally a single image, and are now 3 individual .jpgs layered upon each other using the z-index for positioning. All images also act as links, navigating the viewer through the website in a non-organized fashion from page to page.

Logo, Business Card, Shopping Bag, and Gift Box for a trendy Jewelry Boutique.
Logo was painted in Photoshop, and assembled with type in InDesign.
Business Card, Shopping Bag, and Gift Box templates and designs were created in Illustrator and InDesign.
The pieces incorporate a clean, fresh, feminine feel, utilizing legato rhythm, soft lines, and cool, relaxing, crisp color.

Stark Nightclub

Stark is a Nightclub and Bar in Chicago, Il. The above is a set of 4 matchboxes, when placed together display the black and white photograph as a whole. The Image was shot using a high ISO film to create the graininess and printed at a high contrast to create an even greater feeling of starkness. The Logo was created by manipulating type in Illustrator, has a very stripped and urban feel. The entire peice has a very urban, modern feel, and the absence of color adds to the starkness of the matchboxes.

The Layout was created in InDesign, and when each matchbox is opened, you see the image in its entirety, under the matches, in the bottom of the box.

Kalamazoo Gospel Mission

The Tri-Fold Brochure was created in InDesign. The Photographs were supplied by the client and turned into a duo-tone to create a more dramatic and dynamic feel, using just enough blue to create the feeling of isolation and solitude the subjects of the photographs face.

The Logo was created in Illustrator, and conveys the Gospel Mission's Ministry inspired program, representing The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. The Mission's name under the logo means all will be housed and are protected under the three. The quotations used in the photo boxes makes viewers relate to the subject, tying their words of frustration to a face in need. Clean layouts and well utilized white space keeps the brochure visually appealing.

Graphic Elements are used to guide the viewer through the brochure, and the absence of bleeds and use of only 2 colors keeps the printing cost down for the Mission, as they are a non-profit organization.

North Magazine

North Magazine is a monthly publication highlighting outdoor events and activities in Northern Michigan. The February issue is full of blues and greens, representing the outdoorsy, wintry feel of the Upper Peninsula during the winter months. The consistent use of cool, nature inspired colors guides the viewer through the magazine. The type used on the cover is present throughout the magazine as headlines and subheads. Large, colorful images and graphic elements tie the feel of the publication together.

The cover and table of contents were created in InDesign.

The Good Shepherd

The Good Shepherd Poster was created in Photoshop using images captured from the QuickTime Movie Trailer of the film. Different layer masks, transparencies and modes were utilized to create the final layout.

Modern Interpretation Series

The Modern Interpretation Series showcases traditional artworks recreated through new media techniques. I recreated Matisse's "Dance", Rothko's "Blue & Gray", and Mackintosh's "Begonia" using a combination of digital painting and vector graphics in Photoshop and Illustrator.

The Poster and Brochure layouts were created in InDesign, the Logos were created in Illustrator using manipulated type. Interest is kept in both pieces by the creative use of type contrast and the clean layouts. The Met's logo was from MetMuseum.org.

Kentucky Bourbon Festival

The Tri-Fold mailer brochure was created for the Annual Kentucky Bourbon Festival. The white space on both sides of the mailer is a die-cut, so when folded close, part of the image of the glass is seen though the cut-out on the front page.
The layout was created in InDesign, using rich, warm tones that convey the richness of bourbon, along with the elegance associated with this traditional festival. The die-cut image pulls your attention in immediately, and the consistent use of type and elements guides readers throughout the piece.

Stew & Soup Shop

The Stew & Soup Shop is a southern cooking, comfort food, style restaurant. The Logo was created with manipulated type in Illustrator, and the Logo Collateral was created in InDesign.

The Table Tent, Matchbook, Napkin Ring, and Drink Coaster templates were also created in Illustrator and assembled in InDesign.

Rich, warm reds, oranges and browns convey the feelings of hunger and comfort, and recurring type and color are used throughout to create a consistant feel.

Images were shot using a Nikon D-40, and manipulated in Photoshop. Contrast was bumped up,

and the clone tool was used to remove garbage and debris in "Field". The contrast was also upped and a grain filter was used to create the more desolate feeling in "Urban Renewal", which also won a third place honorable mention award in a Digital Art & Design Showcase.
